Computers for Life computer classes - Level 1

Empower yourself through digital literacy! In this course of 8 classes you will gain introductory computer skills teaching you how to:

  • use the keyboard and mouse
  • create and organize documents in folders
  • find information online and recognize scams
  • translate between English and another language
  • use maps to plan a trip
  • send and receive emails
  • set up a computer and connect to the Internet

Classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-4 pm (8 classes in total). Classes start Tuesday, June 10 and end on Tuesday, July 8 (no class Tuesday, July 1). Classes are at Millennium Library, 251 Donald Street in the 3rd floor Study Room.

Offered in partnership with Altered Minds Inc. A CLB of 5 and above is recommended for participants with English as an Additional Language.

Participants who complete the course will receive a certificate of completion and are eligible for a free refurbished computer.

Participants are expected to attend all 8 classes. Please cancel your registration in advance if you are unable to attend. No-show registrants may be denied spots in future workshops.

Public Program Registration Guidelines

  • An email address is required to register for all programs. If you do not have an email address, register by calling or visiting any Library branch.
  • Duplicate registrations for the same name will be cancelled.
  • The Library reserves the right to limit the number of program attendees.
  • Family programs including Baby Rhyme Time, Toddler Time, Family Story Time, and 3-5 with a caregiver programs are an opportunity for caregivers to participate together with their child in the program.
  • School age programs are for children ages 6-8, 6-12, or 9-12. Children attend on their own unless otherwise indicated. Teen programs are for ages 13-17.
  • Programs with children ages 11 and younger require a caregiver to remain in the library during the program. In the absence of a caregiver, the Library does not assume responsibility for a child.
  • Children are not supervised by library staff outside of the program space (e.g. washroom breaks or leaving the program early exit from the program).
  • Children of all abilities are welcome to attend Library programs. If the child requires the support of a caregiver to participate in a program, please speak with staff.
  • Online library programs use Zoom. Please familiarize yourself with Zoom before the program.
