Beginner Southern Michif for Adults
In-PersonPee-piikishkweek! Join us for a free, 10-week introductory course in Southern Michif! Learn the basics of conversational Michif and build community as we reclaim our language.
Classes will be on Mondays, September 15 to November 24, excluding Thanksgiving (October 13). This course is designed to accommodate complete beginners and will focus primarily on speaking the language. No experience necessary!
Instructors David Delorme and Mira Kolodka are Michifs who grew up in Winnipeg. They participated in a Mentor-Apprentice Program (MAP) organized by the Prairies to Woodlands Indigenous Language Revitalization Circle which is designed to create new speakers of endangered languages such as Michif, considered to be critically endangered. The team has training in teaching Indigenous languages from the University of Winnipeg, and members have learned their language from mother tongue speakers and former MAP apprentices.
Ka-waapamitinawaaw! We look forward to seeing you there!
