Mushroom Cultivation

Join small scale mushroom cultivation expert Tom Nagy of River City Mushrooms as he introduces you to the world of homegrown gourmet and medicinal mushrooms.

During this program, you will learn:

  • what mushrooms and fungi are;
  • what species and varieties can be easily grown both indoors and outdoors; and
  • how to best care for them to ensure consistent and bountiful crops of mushrooms.

Hassle-free, low-skill techniques will be highlighted as a way for beginners to experience mushroom cultivation, without having to invest in any sophisticated equipment or learn advanced techniques. A copy of the presentation material and additional resources will be provided to participants.

Tom Nagy of River City Mushrooms is a restoration ecologist with a passion for botany and mycology who has worked as an organic farmer, field botanist, and environmental consultant.

Public Program Registration Guidelines

  • An email address is required to register for all programs. If you do not have an email address, register by calling or visiting any Library branch.
  • Duplicate registrations for the same name will be cancelled.
  • The Library reserves the right to limit the number of program attendees.
  • Family programs including Baby Rhyme Time, Toddler Time, Family Story Time, and 3-5 with a caregiver programs are an opportunity for caregivers to participate together with their child in the program.
  • School age programs are for children ages 6-8, 6-12, or 9-12. Children attend on their own unless otherwise indicated. Teen programs are for ages 13-17.
  • Programs with children ages 11 and younger require a caregiver to remain in the library during the program. In the absence of a caregiver, the Library does not assume responsibility for a child.
  • Children are not supervised by library staff outside of the program space (e.g. washroom breaks or leaving the program early exit from the program).
  • Children of all abilities are welcome to attend Library programs. If the child requires the support of a caregiver to participate in a program, please speak with staff.
  • Online library programs use Zoom. Please familiarize yourself with Zoom before the program.
