Out On a Limb: Saving the Urban Canopy

Online

It is said that trees are the only form of city infrastructure that increase in value and capacity over time. So why do we continue to cut down trees and banish nature from our cities? In Out On a Limb: Saving the Urban Canopy, author Erna Buffie explores the secret lives and extraordinary benefits of trees in cities, the critical role urban forests can play in increasing climate resiliency, and how grassroots organizations can empower city leaders to invest in the urban forests and greenspaces we love – and need.

Erna Buffie is a writer, environmental activist, and documentary filmmaker, who worked with CBC’s The Nature of Things for more than 20 years. Her award-winning films include Smarty Plants – The Secret World of Plant Behaviour and One Ocean: The Changing Sea. Co-chair of Trees Please Winnipeg Coalition, she is perhaps best known to Winnipeggers for her regular opinion editorials on politics and the environment in the Winnipeg Free Press.
