The Art of Memoir Writing with Jenny Heijun Wills

Join writer and professor Jenny Heijun Wills, author of the memoir, Older Sister. Not Necessarily Related and more recently the non-fiction, Everything and Nothing at Allfor a workshop on the art of writing a memoir. This session is open to writers and anyone who is curious about writing. It will explore how to deal with voice in memoir writing, and how to separate the writer from the speaker when writing about your own life. Participants will be offered writing prompts, and Jenny will discuss her own experience of writing about being a transnational and transracial adoptee.

No previous writing experience is required. Please bring a laptop or notebook.

Public Program Registration Guidelines

  • An email address is required to register for all programs. If you do not have an email address, register by calling or visiting any Library branch.
  • Duplicate registrations for the same name will be cancelled.
  • The Library reserves the right to limit the number of program attendees.
  • Family programs including Baby Rhyme Time, Toddler Time, Family Story Time, and 3-5 with a caregiver programs are an opportunity for caregivers to participate together with their child in the program.
  • School age programs are for children ages 6-8, 6-12, or 9-12. Children attend on their own unless otherwise indicated. Teen programs are for ages 13-17.
  • Programs with children ages 11 and younger require a caregiver to remain in the library during the program. In the absence of a caregiver, the Library does not assume responsibility for a child.
  • Children are not supervised by library staff outside of the program space (e.g. washroom breaks or leaving the program early exit from the program).
  • Children of all abilities are welcome to attend Library programs. If the child requires the support of a caregiver to participate in a program, please speak with staff.
  • Online library programs use Zoom. Please familiarize yourself with Zoom before the program.
